Lloyd Milton Short was born on 3 February 1897 in Knoxville, Illinois. He earned his B.A. from Knox College (Galesburg, Illinois) in 1919. He earned his M.A. in 1920 and Ph.D. in 1922 from the University of Illinois. After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Short worked as an associate professor of political science at the University of Akron (Ohio) for one year (1922-1923) before moving to the University of Missouri. Courses were first taught in political science by University of Minnesota president William Watts Folwell in 1871. The department of political science was established within the College of Science, Literature and the Arts in 1879. In 1906, the department underwent a name change to Economics and Politics.
